  • This is definitely mind boggling. The explanation is not that the galaxies are "moving apart", but rather some force (possibly Dark Energy) is causing space to expand between the galaxies, and the only evidence available for the expansion is red shift, which indicates that the light itself (from extremely distant objects, like other galaxies) is becoming stretched.
