http://www.ted.com Designer Jessi Arrington packed nothing for TED but 7 pairs of undies, buying the rest of her clothes in thrift stores around LA. It's a meditation on conscious consumption -- wrapped in a rainbow of color and creativity.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate.

Creativity and utilizing the value of consumption 'bored' you? Was it because she smiled and was friendly and spoke without using 'big words' that suddenly, her views became less than intellectually stimulating? Didn't you get SOME kind of take home message? Don't forget. The world is comprised of many different views with pockets of gems in many aspects of daily life. Aren't you being dismissive because her presentation didn't fit -your- criteria of "smart"?

Maybe because taking a snippet of the whole sentence renders it into what is called a quotation, and is not necessarily a what one would call a sentence. And if what you were trying to say is that you don't think the sentence you took that quotation from is a sentence, I have to ask why not? Because you don't agree with what it is saying? Perhaps you need to broaden your perspective.

also, "utilizing the value of consumption" doesn't even make sense as a sentence.

There is nothing valuable about pithy, cliche statements about "learning to love yourself" and "finding your inner child" and a women showing us pictures of her in a poncho. Her views are less than intellectually stimulating not because she "doesn't use big words", but because she honestly has nothing novel to say. Everyone knows what a thrift shop is and how to use one, and that's what makes it irrelevant and unnecessary and yes, brainless.

Maybe they disliked it because it was about fashion, a trivial topic. I'm glad TED is broadening their horizons and giving many people with many different ideas this kind of opportunity, but this particular TEDtalk seems trivial to me and not something I like. I doubt that Jessi is judged negatively for her kindness and down to earth simplicity- that was the best part of her. Actually, I think she is downrated for the less than pleasing content of her talk.

I think it's because her talk really wasn't that original and didnt really bring anything new or unheard of to TED talks. Also, her outfits (i guess this is more on opinion) weren't THAT impressive. She was cute and energetic, but most of the thigns she said, millions of people have said before, and billions have heard already.

i think you are painting with broad strokes that may be the case with some but then again putting people in a boxes (when we clearly aren't boxes) usually put ones views on unstable ground.. such is the nature of assumptions... as nelly furtado once put it "all i can do is try"...
