warren52nz, you are correct in your summation. It is laughable that a religious person will attack the term "theory" yet ignore the implications of the term "faith". What is silly is that we are still having these discussions in an age of scientific enlightenment.
I think believing in God odes make you dumber. It is not smart at all to accept the Bible as an authorative book that is divinely inspired at all. It aims only to add to human arrogance, intolerance, cruelity, and ignorance. It is a waste of human energy and a psychological drain hole.
The christians appeal to the common (mistaken) belief that the US is a christian nation and to be atheist means rejection of America, and christian values like morals, family, love, goodwill, compassion, etc. This paints atheists as being immoral, depraved, hateful, selfish, unpatriotic, etc. which is not fair. Look up "Humanism". some prominent atheists love being anti-jesus and are just as much to blame as christians for this confusion.
Atheism is simply a lack of belief in any gods and does not single out jesus. It's not a call to arms against christianity, it's a call to stand up against the hate and discrimination of people who simply don't have any beliefs, and to stand up against the religious right's powerful influence on government and their attempts to merge church and state.
I think the "christian nation" problem is a default self-identification.
Non-reflective people who don't really have a considered opinion on the matter (the majority), will more often consider themselves chrisitan by default.
This is a circular problem, media reports of the christian nation fuel it's actuality.
Campaigns like Out and the Bright movement may just break the cycle.
