Anyone should put money away for retirement in addition to whatever public or private pension they expect. The woman speaking looks able enough to supplement her retirement with a 15-20 hour week part time job like most retirees are doing these days. That said, the unions aren't responsible for our budget problems. NAFTA and other free trade agreements that benefit international corporations over workers are to blame, followed by TARP bail outs of people that should have gone to jail.
You should listen more closely. The lady said she doesn't qualify for S.S. State workers and school teachersare not allowed to participate in S.S. She put way more into her retirement fund than I did into S.S. and yet she will receive roughly what I do. I guess she really did put some extra aside for her own retirement. Corporate execs stop paying into S.S. at less than 100 K in the year. They go on to make millions more, retire on milllions and still collect the maximum S.S. check. Greeedy!
Instead of thinking of it as providing "service" for 36 years, how about being thankful for having a job for 36 years? God... people think that by working they are doing someone a favor. The favor is mutual.
This lady wasn't saving for her own retirement as well? Why is she ineligible for Social Security? Maybe because she isn't old enough to collect! I'd like to retire young as well....
