OpenCL came to Linux and Windows first... and it's yet to be used for anything.
However... Windows also has CUDA(nVidia, portable to ATi) and CTM(ATi-only) and DirectX 11 can do GPGPU.

Last I checked HP has some laptops with GPUs vastly superior to the 9600mGT.
You can get a sub$1000 HP with the mobile radeon 4650.

open CL would work with both Mac Windows and Linux. thats why Mac is more compatible. OpenComputerLanguage. OpenGL OpenGraphicsLanguage.

If Apple was somehow able to get DirectX in Snow leopard (or whatever else they release in the future) and provide other resources for Macs they would probably gain a lot of the market share.
