well a bench press goes wrong and it is a little difficult to watch. Rick is OK ( after a couple of crached ribs) and won the next year ..Rick has a suicide grip so this normall won't happen if you grip with your thumbs but he doesn't.( ie the name) . film lowell 2004 ymca..
heavy weightlifting can cause Carpal tunnel ..and that is why he probably uses this grip.. as for the spotters... yeah they could probably done a better job...but at the top of the bench ..you are not expecting it to fall... enough with the gigities

Just don't use the thumbless grip. The whole thing about it increasing your bench performance is a damn myth. It's only slightly more comfortable then a normal grip until the bar comes crashing down on your body.

thumbless is more due more to carpal tunnel than due to a preference .

Normally you dont DROP the weight suddenly. You just cannot lift it anymore with your own power. Start working out then you will know what I mean.

I assume that you lose some power with the normal grip so with the hook / monkey / suicide grip youre a bit stronger. However I can recommend this grip when doing pulling exercises.
