My arrangement of "Jamaica Farewell." The lyrics for the song were written by Lord Burgess (Irving Burgie). Lord Burgess was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926. His mother was from Barbados and his father was from Virginia. The song first appeared on Harry Belafonte's phenomenally successful album Calypso. It reached number fourteen on Billboard's Pop chart.
Though many, including Belafonte himself, have said that the song was popular in the West Indies since long before Burgess, it is believed that Burgess compiled and modified the song from many folk pieces to make a new song, and it is indubitable that it was Belafonte who popularised the song outside the Caribbean Islands. Burgess acknowledged his use of the tune of another calypso, "Iron Bar".
I hope that you enjoy my version of this song!!! Please feel free to comment, and to "PLEASE RATE" the video..."THANKS!"

  • Beautiful man, just beautiful! The pictures, the music, the warm sunshine, the cool Caribbean sea breeze, the brilliant turquoise and emerald green waters washing up on the white sand shore under the coconut palms! I was just in the Caribbean last month and this took me back there instantly--thanks ilovetrains63! Grenada, St. Maarten's, Tobago, Dominica, San Juan, and Barbados! (I'll hazard a guess as to the picture at 0:54; it's the glass bottom boats at Buccoo Reef, (Trinidad &) Tobago.) :o)

  • Hi @dustymiller65,

Thanks a lot for the very nice compliments my friend!!! You paint a very nice mental picture of your trip to the Caribbean!!! It was probably a lot warmer there than it was back home! ;o)

    Best Regards From California,

    Dwayne

  • Would you kindly specify the beaches or areas in JA these pics are from? I hope to go there in the spring. Thanks!

  • Hi chefdjour28,

Sorry...I don't have a clue What the names are! The pics are from the internet. I didn't take them! Even if I'd taken the pics, I'd probably not have named the beaches, because this is for my music not a travel show. The pics are just an added bonus as you listen to my arrangements! :o) Thanks for listening!

    Regards,

    Dwayne

  • Thank you for the history of the song. I was gonna look it up but now I don't have to. I like knowing these things. Lot of songs were changed over the years. One of my favorite songs from the Islands is Oh Carolina, Folkes Bros and older versions before Shaggy. I like his, but his is so different from the old versions, but every one does a completely diff style. I couln't find the lyrics so I listened to a buch of diff ones and tried to be true to original

  • Good job!

  • Somehow, the crystal clear waters and endless palm trees will never compare to the majesty of the evergreens and the torrential rain pouring outside my window.

  • J'adore l'orgue,allié à la guitare,et une super batterie!

    Vidéo floue,quel dommage!!
