There was a minute when it looked like it wouldn't shut down !
Quite funny !
I MUST EMPHASISE, I have NO connection with this place and it's history, workings, staff or anything else !
I have an interest in physics and thought I'd capture this 'moment' and upload it due to it being a significant event in the greater 'scope of things'.....! Respect to all involved is due !

  • On TUESDAY 31st January this channel will be DELETED for good.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask !

    Cya !

  • A sad day for science as americas biggest particle accelerator is turned off, read many a book about its successes, some day hopefully it will spring to life again. good luck to all the redundant staff!!

  • @danshawz : Thanks for the comment. It is a shame to see it being de-commissioned, however, given its age, lifespan and accomplishments it certainly stood its ground and proved its worth ! The whole thing is not being shut-down though, it will still carry out certain research. The running costs are what is 'mothballing' it I think. The complex and hardware will be utilised for other work, (or another accellerator), I'm sure !

  • Are they planning to build another accelerator at Fermilab? Or pick up the SSC ruin and use that one instead?

  • They should keep it open as a museum, and for beginning scientists to see the basics of the tools of these sciences!

  • 28 years in operation, you'd think we'd found out why such things as ghosts exist, when the laws of physics states they shouldn't, and the mysteries of gravity. I tell ya, we have scientists looking for Dark matter, it's like looking for water deep under the ocean, but no ones talks about it, Dark matter exists, but UFO, nah, that we can't believe in, even if both are equally unseen and unproven. I gotta give it to you guys, at least you worked all these 28 years, with no problems! Best of luck!

  • @danshawz It's not a sad occasion. Like all machines, they are built, they function and they break down. That being said, the world is not yet particle colliderless, the LHC took over as the greatest particle collider to date. It too will break down someday, and we will need to build another collider, bigger and better than the LHC, so we can investigate the universe even more carefully than ever before.
