What is a Hodag?
From The Badger Report, 3/13/08

Reporting By: Mike Ewing
Videography By: Joe DeFrancesci

According to Brandon "Muffin" Malecek, a UW-Madison senior and member of the school's unofficial Ultimate Frisbee team, a Hodag is a mythological creature from the Wisconsin northwoods that came around the 1800's and started eating cattle and small children. "It spreads fear to the masses and is a fearsome creature," Malecek said.

While the University of Wisconsin's Ultimate Frisbee team dates back to the 1970's, it's still relatively unknown. The Hodags are a totally student-run team; they do just fine without any coaches. But since they aren't an official Badger team, they don't received any support from the University. So the team pays it's own way to travel to tournaments all across the country. Last year, they lost only one of their 56 games before winning the national title.

"We win with work," explained Kevin "Bucket" (because of his excessive sweating) Riley, a senior and member of the team. While other teams in warmer locales, like Florida and California, spend all year outside practicing their throws and game strategy, the Hodags have neither the weather nor the facilities to do that.
"We get once a week on the indoor field and the rest of the days we're on this [indoor track] just hauling ass," Riley said.

Will "Fat" Lokke (he's actually skinny), another senior on the team, said the Hodags "win with work" and rely on intensity to win their games. "Maybe we don't have the most polished throws or the best strategies but we try to run harder than everybody else and that shows," Looke said.

The Hodags are currently undefeated, and they hope to carry that winning streak through the National Championships in May.Originally from the Badger Report. URL here:http://www.journalism.wisc.edu/j419/webspring08/3_13/hodags.html
