@bigjigyeah haha I've lived most of my life in Commonwealth countries and it seems to me that the British are like "yeah let's name this place/street/road after some random British dude or king/aristocrat" when it comes to naming things. :)
-
@johnmcn90 You may note, that when New South Wales was named as such by said ship's captain, there was no such thing as "Australia", and the claimed area "New South Wales" included what is now Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and ACT. (It did not include New Holland (ie, Western Australia) or Van Diemen's Land (ie Tasmania) which had been discribed named and claimed by other... mostly dutch, people already.)

As an Aussie I find this hilarious :) It doesn't stop there though - it's like they got progressively lazier as they went further west. "What about this massive patch of land that takes up most of western Australia?" "Let's name it Western Australia"
-
@119glory why add the "new" unless they already existed?
-
@ronoc9 New Guinea, New Zealand, New Foundland, New Port, Newcastle, New West Haverbrook... (I made the last one up, see :P) carry on.

I love the Star Trek reference...

Brilliant! And I am from South Wales.
-
@ronoc9 Lol yeah!
-
@adi87tya as Eddie Izzard would say "do you have a flag?"
-
@ronoc9 Let's be honest. Most of these countries were already "discovered" by humans.
As a resident of New South Wales, I find this hilarious. Mind you, I think I'd find this hilarious no matter where I lived, these guys are great.
