Yeah, the Vega was not a bad looking car at all! Pull that POS 4 banger out and drop in a SBC and do a few suspension mods, upgrade the brakes, etc... you got yerself a fine automobile... it's what Chevy SHOULD have done... a baby Camaro.
-
Except the Vega and the Fiero GT, they could maybe be the ugliest cars in the world :D
-
OMG, I have never seen the Chevy Vega before! I just have to say, what a beautiful car!

the Olds was a good car unless it had a diesel engine. Your entitled to your opinion, but i dont think you know jack shit about cars except for what other people tell you.

and the ford escort and tempo..are huge piles!

The Pinto on the otherhand used drivetrain parts that had been developed and used in England and Germany for years, so they had a track record. The Pinto 1600 was used in formula Ford racing and several hi-performance european cars used the 1600 with a Lotus twin cam head. It also one of the first american cars to use rack and pinion steering.I loved to see how fast I could get my Pinto down a very twisty section of road.
Now you've done it! I'm going to have to go find me a Pinto to play with!

I was a mechanic in the early 1970s. Overheat or let the oil in a Vega get down once and you had scrap metal in the engine compartment. As Delorean said, the engine was designed by commitee and rushed into production. Transmissions were terrinle and the bodies would rust out while sitting on the lot. One dealer I worked at had a panel wagon Vega sitting on the lot for a year and a half. It went through 2 sets of fenders while sitting there!!

1973 Pinto continued: The car had a wonderful manual transmission that shifted like butter also(at least mine did).
The downsides were that the engine bolts were metric and the body bolts were English, so you had to guess at which tool to use. The spare tire stuck up behind the back seat so you couldn't set anything flat on it. The seats got uncomfortable on long trips and the engine rocked at idle and wore out lots of exhaust manifold gaskets...but that may have been due to bad motor mounts.

I had a 1973 Pinto hatchback with a 2 liter engine . It had incredible steering, awesome gas mileage, The engine was very reliable, and parts were inexpensive. My car, being a hatchback, with the back seat down and the front seat tipped forward, I could get a six foot ladder in that thing with the hatch closed. The gas tank explosion problem was fixed with a $12 piece of plastic. Not hardly enough to Merritt this as a Worst Car Of All Time. I even camped in this car.
