Carl is the closest thing we have to Buddy Rich in the rock world. Some of his cymbal work closely mimmicks Rich. Yes in fact there is nothing new under the sun. I never saw Rich do any bass drum-gong stuff like Carl does but Louie Belson kicked double bass drum ass way before Carl ever even tried! Carl is still number one for me though.
