@tomsk14 The competition happened at the same time Romania was going through a huge political revolution...the entire team was sent to the airport, and when they got there, they were told that only Gina would compete at the Goodwill Games.

I wasn't aware of the year she started with Belu. But I have been wondering if a lot of her "spark" and animation was lost after the horrific beam crash - was that 1994? It seems like before that she was all over the place, and after she was very within herself. Just speculating. Hell, she could have just had constant injuries that caused her to withdraw. She seems like she's doing pretty good today, though.

Many of the gyms in Romania had closed down because of the revolution the year before. This was when the country was in transition from overthrowing the communist government.

The English is horrible, but if you can get past it, I sort of think it lends a certain charm to the book. It really feels more . . . Romanian - especially Alexandra's quotes. Like when she refers to a psychiatrist visit as a "head checking."
