  • Hello. Im a builder of a 601hd plane. And i want to install vw engine.

What do you think about security that have this type of reduction system?

    The belt not slip?

    Thanks

  • @RUBENSRANDO, I'm using a 8mm GT cog belt, it doesn't slip, have about 50 hrs on it now with no problems, you may want to use a 12 lb flywheel because the redrive takes a lot of torsional vibration from the engine, the only other issue with VW is keeping the heads from overheating. Check out my other video VW powered 701

  • This has an appearance similar to Don Stewart 's (Stewart Headwind) PRSU from mid to late '60's. Any connection? Did you design this, are drawing available? What ratio, what size/pitch prop do you expect to spin?

  • I actually talked to Don and purchased a set of his plans, but the design is mine, his required 100% of the parts to be fabricated. This design uses blower sprockets. The ratio is 1.6 to 1, check out my other video, I am flying my 701 using a 70" prop. I may work up some plans after I have proven it reliable.

  • The big advantage of the re drive allows for a larger 3 bladed, ground adjustable prop. We have a 2180cc VW engine in our plane and it's much faster then other Volksplanes.

  • hello!

I have a zodiac 601 hd with a aerovee VW engine. The engine is to weak for this configuration and I thought that maybe an reduction drive will help me.

Did you build this reduction drive your self? Where did you buy the plans? Seem like every on are asking the same thing here. I know that I can build on my self but i dont realy know what cind of bearing I should use on the big wheel..

Any way, it looks and it sounds nice.

    god job, razvan

  • Thnx for the answers Rick.

Will you please post a comment so I receive notification if this materializes into plans? May I ask how much cost you have in it? Did you do the machine work on the fabricated parts, or have to farm it out?

Granted, 701 is already STOL, I'm really impressed with short takeoff & steep climb behind a VW!

Will it fit on a cut case 1/2 VW? If weight is not a consideration, I imagine a significant increase in thrust would more than offset the gain.

  • It may be a little heavy for a 1/2 VW engine. Sorry, it was custom built without drawings or plans, most parts had to custom fabricated. Check out stewart aircraft, he sells plans for the "maximizer" .

  • @reconrick1

Have you any drawings and parts list necessary to fabricate? Will it be OK 1/2VW with such redrive? Thanks

  • That redrive looks like a beast, as well as the motor. Looks great. i'd like to see the whole aircraft though. from the video i can't even tell what it is. Thanks
