Joe Calzaghe, The Pride of Wales, On The Right Road and Having the Most Amazing Journey.

Originally a small college project made whilst studying at Newport Film School in Wales.

Abandoned for many years and never fully given the post-production polish it sorely required, this rushed assembled edit - bar the new end credit section and titles - is as it was left in 1991 at college. The reasons why it was left unfinished is straighforward, and in most likelihood it was just left because everyone was soon involved in other projects and course work.

I remember it also took a long while just to go through the interviews - Joe and Enzo were both interviewed I recall - and also to transcribe everything even before editing.
That and the amount of footage to catalogue was a nightmare - I still have the hefty bundle of tapes and notes somewhere. As it is, I'm not surprised that it was never finished properly.

Anyway, after all these years I've decided to update the end section and let it be seen, hopefully as some sort of tribute to Joe. Of course, a lot has happened since the video shoot and some 6 years afterwards Joe actually won the World Title, so I felt it was fitting to add an addendum and illustrate that he was indeed 'On The Right Road' and that not only did he become a professional boxer, but he actually became a legendary one as well.

I hope this video will provide a little insight into a modern sporting legend, and that maybe this portrait of a world champion as a young man will provide inspiration to others.

This video is for Joe and Enzo, and for all the fans who have cheered them on for so long, and so successfully.

Cheers,
Simon Leung

  • For all you who think you know Joe, he was actually born in Hammersmith, London. I am English but was mainly brought up in wales and can understand why Joe says he is welsh. You all should be appreciating the guy no matter where he is from, whether it be England, Wales, British or from timbuctoo, it dont matter. He's gave us some great memories, appreciate a legend and grow up.

  • thank you for the video. Who ever knew that this guy would become the best ever at 168

  • @Extravirgin1 Bullshit,ok Hopkins might of looked to have been better but thats only because he was using his ring exp to slow the fight as he was never going to match Calzaghes pace,he play acted and stalled during the fight to get his wind.Caalzaghe was too fast for him.And how come if he was over the hill did he easily beat Kelly Pavlik? He took the fight to Jean Pascal so saying he was over the hill when he fought Calzaghe is bullshit.
