Minecraft Beta 1.6 - Mushroom Farm Tutorial - Mostly Mob-Free and Semi Automatic

With the Minecraft Beta 1.6 update out, mushrooms are now able to spread, which means they can be farmed. The only issue with farming mushrooms in Minecraft is that they require dark environments otherwise they pop out of the ground. Why is this an issue? Well, because large dark environments are the kind of places that skeletons, zombies, spiders and creepers like to call home. This means that if you are playing on any difficulty other than peaceful (and, let's face it, why would you need mushrooms on peaceful?) your farm will likely produce mobs, as well as mushrooms.

So, I quickly came up with this design for a mushroom farm in Minecraft. The farm is designed so that mushrooms are planted in a 1 block tall space underneath the floor. The floor is made out of half slabs meaning that mobs are unable to spawn on it. The mushrooms are harvested by placing water in a hole which causes the mushrooms to break out of the ground and be funneled to a collection point.

The farm I make is also separated out so that there is a section for red spotted mushrooms and brown mushrooms. Each of these two sections (the red and brown mushroom sections) are divided into two smaller sections each so that you have control over how many of each type of mushroom you want to collect (you can harvest some while leaving the rest growing)

As I mention a couple of times, this farm is by no means flawless, I just wanted to get the idea out there. I will probably be trying to perfect it in an upcoming episode of my LP series.

@galaxyinvador1 it used to work but the way mushrooms grow has been changed and now only a certain number of mushrooms will grow in a certain amount of space. It's been a while since I looked into the specifics though.

No point making a mushy farm because we have giant mushrooms that drop mushrooms :D
