This actually does happen to football and baseball refs a lot, and it's something they specifically try to train out of them. After spending a career playing safety, or shortstop, a ref/ump will sometimes, in the heat of the moment, instinctively go to make a tackle, or shift over towards a line drive in baseball. Even though he technically did "do it on purpose," I don't think he meant it maliciously. It was just his old instincts kicking in.
