Roanoke Steam Pump, built in Buffalo then shipped to Roanoke in order to pump water from the chrystal springs, it started operation in the late 1800's. It still operates, but not by its former boiler, which was removed in the late 60's, early 70's. It was operated 24 hours a day, at 42 revolutions a minute.

Today, the engine is operated by the historical society. Every sunday, 1-4. It is a one of a kind sight to still see move.

  • I know of their financial problems. I know the 917 left. I'm asking why they are not promoting the effort to raise the money to save them. A mention of it on the VMofT web sight would help. Talking with the local news would too. They can do news other than VA Tech. (joke). The way to save them is here and should have been started long ago. Promote it get the word out there. Sitting around wishing will not make it happen. I say they don't care from the lack of promotion of this.

  • Well... we jsut dont have the money... seriously... we are trying our best... and dont give me those ideas... go to teh museum... I left virginia not long ago, but Iw as apart of the group for a long while. It would get done, if we were able...

  • There are simple free ways to get the word out there about the effort to save them. Put something on the sight, call the local news and have something about it at the museum. I know the city of Roanoke is no help. The like to spend $3k on a eye sore and $4 on a foot bridge. Forget what the total is when they started clearing land for that stadium then had to clean up barrels of waist that was found. Big bucks there.

  • Dude... I dont work there anymore after I left... honestly... if you want to voice yourself, Email the museum, it would be good for them to hear what Ive been trying to tell to anyone who would listen, for a long while. Not me... Im only a archivest, yardmaster, and tour guide

  • If you work for the museum then do you know about the effort to save the remaining lost engines of Roanoke? The word needs to get out there if we are to save these pieces. I haven't seen anything on VMofT web sight. There is a sight dedicated to the engines that is trying to raise the money to move them to the VMofT. The people that should care seam not to. Search for the sight lost engines of Roanoke as you tube won't let me post the link here.

  • And dont EVER get the idea that we dont... We DO 100%, Alright? I know it takes effort, maybe if we had other priorities, rather then those beautiful hulks... We would do it! But some things come first!

  • Got that earlyer. Looked for a way to e-mail them o there sight and didn't se a way. So I posted a comment about it on their blog a month ago. No response no other post. Thats why I got the impression they don't care.

  • I didn't intend to get ya fired up. I don't know what went on after they moved after the flood of 85. I remember when I was a kid when it was located at Wasena Park There was always a line to get in and the place was busy on the weekends. I think it may have something to do with the location? Think it was a better set up at the old place. Things were spreed out where you could really look at them. Not crammed together. Really suck since they are fixing the flooding problem that made them move.

  • Well we do care... we cant do anything... Techincly... most are already being sold and delivered to otehr people, one engine is already gone. We dont have the funds or resources to do anything about it! We want to, we want to badly... Dont get me wrong, I know the site, we are partners with them, In a way...

  • Indeed! you should go out an look at it on sundays, its kinda fun to see.
