Kinderszenen (original spelling Kinderscenen, "Scenes from Childhood"), Opus 15, by Robert Schumann, is a set of thirteen pieces of music for piano written in 1838. In this work, Schumann provides us with his adult reminiscences of childhood. Schumann had originally written 30 movements for this work, but chose 13 for the final version.
Schumann had originally labeled this work Leichte Stücke (Easy Pieces). Likewise, the section titles were only added after the completion of the music, and Schumann described the titles as "nothing more than delicate hints for execution and interpretation".Timothy Taylor has discussed Schumann's choice of titles for this work in the context of the changing situation of music in 19th century culture and economics.

Robert Schumann wrote:

"It is impertinent to judge a whole life by a single action; since the moment which threatens to overthrow a system may often be explained and justified."..."With some timidity, I express my opinion of works, with whose forerunners I am unacquainted. I would gladly know somewhat of a composer's school, his youthful views, his exemplars, ay, even of his actions, the circumstances of his life, — in a word, somewhat of the whole man and artist as he has hitherto proved himself."

During the time he composed "Kinderszenen", Schumann Wieck's opposition caused him much stress--and in the constant affection of the fine woman who held his happiness he discovered much love. "My troubles have been productive of much music," he wrote..."I have never written so thoroughly from the soul as just lately."

  • Ohh that is a very sweet piece. Relaxing-but light and uplifting. You can almost feel the essence of that era long ago in this piece. Days before electricity, computers.
