In 1891, a black minister named Daniel Jenkins, started a Black Orphan Aid Society in Charleston, SC. The Jenkins Orphanage Band was formed to perform on the streets of Charleston in an effort to raise money for the fledgling black orphanage. The band would play Dixieland-style brass music and mug it up for the assembled crowd.
Within two decades the band had performed at the St. Louis World's Fair, the London Expo appeared on Broadway and marched in two presidential inaugurations. As members of the band grew of age, they left Charleston for Northern larger cities like Chicago and New York.
The Jenkins band made an annual trip to Harlem was for years was the featured act during the Labor Day celebration at Abyssinian Baptist Church. The most popular dance in American history "the Charleston" is directly linked to these musicians.
