App "Oriantal Books - Oriental Treasures of the Bavarian State Library"

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek now presents 20 splendid manuscripts from its voluminous Oriental collection in the form of an application for iPads and iPhones

The App "Oriental books", in which for example the famous oriental cosmography "The Miracles of Creation" of the year 1280, an internationally known Persian "Book of Kings" (around 16th/17th century) or a prayer book of the harem lady Düsdidil (Istanbul, 1845) are contained in the form of high-resolution digital copies, can be browsed from the first to the last page.

The valuable and rare Koran manuscripts as well as select examples of Arabic, Persian and Ottoman book art form part of the Oriental collection, whose foundation was laid already in 1558, the foundation year of the library. Today the collection comprises around 17,000 Oriental manuscripts, among them around 4,200 from the Islamic cultural area and around 260,000 printed works.

The public interest in the Islamic cultural area shows no sign of diminishing in Germany and is currently even reinforced by the political sea changes in the Arab world. For the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek with its internationally oriented collections this represents a challenge and an opportunity at the same time, to use corresponding offers to raise awareness of the unique written cultural tradition of the Orient, and to thus also contribute new aspects to the frequently controversial political discussion about Islam.

Seit kurzem präsentiert die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek 20 Prachthandschriften aus ihrer umfangreichen Orientsammlung als Application für iPad und iPhone.

Über die App „Oriental books", in der beispielsweise die berühmte arabische Kosmographie „Die Wunder der Schöpfung" aus dem Jahr 1280, ein weltweit bekanntes persisches „Königsbuch" (ca. 16./17. Jh.) oder ein Gebetbuch der Haremsdame Düsdidil (Istanbul, 1845) vollständig hochauflösend digitalisiert enthalten sind, können die Werke von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite durchgeblättert werden.

Die wertvollen und seltenen Koranhandschriften sowie erlesenen Beispiele arabischer, persischer und osmanischer Buchkunst sind Teil der Orientsammlung, deren Grundstock bereits im Gründungsjahr 1558 gelegt wurde. Heute umfasst die Sammlung 17.000 orientalische Handschriften, darunter ca. 4.200 aus dem islamischen Kulturkreis sowie ca. 260.000 Drucke.

Das öffentliche Interesse am islamischen Kulturkreis, aktuell noch verstärkt durch die politischen Umwälzungen in der arabischen Welt, ist in Deutschland ungebrochen. Für die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek mit ihren international ausgerichteten Sammlungen ist dieses Interesse Herausforderung und Chance zugleich, mit entsprechenden Angeboten die einzigartige schriftliche Kulturtradition des Orients sichtbar zu machen und so auch neue Aspekte zur oft kontrovers geführten politischen Diskussion über den Islam beizutragen.
