In this video one of my graduate students, Ivan Elhart, is testing radio patching (see Ivan's eceblogger post about this experiment here: http://www.eceblogger.com/?p=46). Ivan is using the Project54 system, which is connected to two different radios (Motorola and EF Johnson), via a USB audio switch. The system tested here is an advanced version of the system described in this tech report: http://www.project54.unh.edu/Reference/Download.pm/2561/Document.PDF.

  • I don't get it. What's the point? This looks like mundane hammy stuff.

Was this a test of interopability with some fancy Motorola software?

Ok I read the Motorola notes and I guess you can plug any radio into the interface and not have any problems where they just don't currently have anything for that now.

  • RadioReporter01, the point is that you can patch radios cheaply. The software is Project54 software developed at the University of New Hampshire. You can also buy equipment to do this sort of a thing but it's costly.

  • a bit of bias going on, high tech nonsense,

motorola, versus Johnson, the specs, intermod, selectivity and spurious are NOT the same. For a patching video, how about using , group one , group two talk group for audio announcing, deceptive video. rtg.

  • Bombova, what's deceptive? We're patching radios, that's what the video shows.

  • what software r u using

  • Hi driverx125, sorry for the delay in responding. This is the Project54 software, written in C++.

  • think your missing the point, these two systems could be miles apart for example or in different countries

  • so patching is taking one channel group and intefacing it with another right??

  • I once converted a x86 laptop puter into a repeater using two radios. The wattage was a mere 4 instead of 40, but saved a lot of money and worked like a charm.

  • Where is th computer in all of this? You need to be in touch with a base?

And I can interface all of that with my ham walkie talkie. It looks like a nice hookup but I still don't get it.

In fact I made a repeater out of a vox phone patch with 2 diff radios and recently using a toy vox microphone and any 2 walkie talkies.

Does this take control of the radios or just tx/rx?

  • were can u find it at?
