I agree with you about the placement of planets. I live in Montreal, Canada and while in this part of the hemisphere it is possible to see Saturn, Mercury and Venus at the SAME time, they are diametricaly opposed from one another and they are not (not from my vantage point at least) close enough to make the configuration you pointed out. So YES they can be seen at the same time but not in that triangle shape. Basically what is being seen is most likely an object or unknown star or planet.
