Another important point to be considered is how to recognize those really passionate impulses which are sometimes just ephemeral manifestations of worthless or superficial desires. In that case, you must be wise enough to avoid being lead astray which will also break you down. But the question is how to recognize the difference on time?

@ImaginalCells Good point - I must read on. Can't expect to know his mind form soundbites!

Interesting video - but I'd like to share a disagreement. As a public school teacher in Detroit I've witnessed how "honoring urges" destroys lives, quite the opposite of what I understand your point to be. Have I misunderstood perhaps?

@brchful
I can't speak for Bob or Joseph Campbell. However, what I believe the meaning of "honoring urges" has to do with is not condemning yourself because you have a certain urge. He's not saying that you should act on everyone of your urges. But if you ignore or surpress those urges or do not fully deal with them, that's where they begin to destroy lives. Michael Meade who deals with at risks youths talks to teens about suicide and urges. Check him out. MosaicVoices [dot] org

@ImaginalCells Surely - acting out the shadow aspects of ones personality must be done in order that they don't create neurosis, or come out in more violent ways. I just want to point out that a discussion on "acting out" or "dealing with" these urges must be dealt with in a more nuanced way. The solution is not simply honoring them, and I think that anyone who says that it is has never really lived in a situtation where people do act on impulses.

@brchful Clips from a larger conversation only convey so much information. People like Bob know the difference between soundbites and sound advice. One of the best is Michael Meade at MosaicVoices [dot] org who I mentioned in my previous post. He has lived in darker situations than most. He's a great resource for the deeper nuances of what Bob was saying. Although, Bob, a frequent speaker at Pacifica Graduate Institute which deals with Depth Psychology, is no slouch either.
