The event is sponsored by the Iwo Jima Survivors Association of Texas. Reunion founder Cy Young told the crowd the Wichita Falls gathering is now the only one of four national groups still active.
This weekend marks the 64th anniversary of the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi. Fighting continued for another 30 days as American forces struggled to rout out Japanese soldiers entrenched in more than 11 miles of mining tunnels on the tiny island. More than 6,800 soldiers, sailors and Marines were killed during the battle and almost 19,000 were wounded.
I would like to contact any of these survivors. Please send me their email or phone number. I am doing a huge NHD project. Thanks
