I saw a lot of comments in the last year saying how religion was ruining the world and nature (the buffalo) but I think you're right. It's been a few months since I watched, and I think it's likely the answer. The opening in the inside of the globe to the golden face used to be in the sky, unobtrusive in the "world". But when turned upside down, the man-made symbols all came crashing down, and the only place left to escape was the opening with golden light.
