Using 3 74HC 595 Shift Registers I created a 5x21 LED Text Scroller Matrix. This is a little bit behind the project and how it works!

  • Wow this is fantastic! Great work! Any chance you could share your code for the Arduino or if it is a standard sketch point me in the right direction? I would really like to build the same setup. Thanks very much for sharing this video!!!

  • I need to just start a blog to throw up source code and such - im really bad about posting what I did - usually cause im already wrapped up in another project! I'll get one up soon and post the link here!

  • yeah - it should, as long as the power drain isnt too much for that many IC's. If you use the transistors for the neg leads you should be ok!

  • Thanks so much for this really invaluable information. This really cleared up a few issues I've been having conceptually.

I am trying to run a series of 200 LEDs connected one after the other using 16 bit shift registers, acting as a sort of "graphic equalizer" that responds to audio. I have it working on a small scale using individual pins off an arduino, but I am concerned about scaling it up. Do you have any thoughts? Will a setup of 12 or so ICs still only require 4 pins?
