solidworks isnt easy as autocad. its far more complex, but more intuitive sometimes. autocad is almost 2d compard to solidworks.

you can make decent amount of $, but working from home is rarely an option, this is team collaborative environment. maybe some overtime work @home

as far as demand goes, look at dying autosector. to be realistic, dont expect anything exciting with s/w as this.

but if u get mech.eng u'll make more money as consultant than designer.

Next year ill be taking engineering at the university. Far from a geek. Notches on the belt if you know what im saying.
