This song is found in The Christian Harmony as well as the Cooper revision of The Sacred Harp. A favorite among singers in Hoboken GA.

Words:

From every stormy wind that blows,
From every swelling tide of woes,
There is a calm, a sure retreat,
'Tis found beneath the mercy seat.

There is a place where Jesus sheds
The oil of gladness on our heads,
A place of all on earth most sweet:
It is the blood-bought mercy seat.

There, there on eagles' wings we soar,
And sin and sense seem all no more;
And heav'n comes down our souls to greet
And glory crowns the mercy seat.

O let my hand forget her skill,
My tongue be silent, cold and still,
This bounding heart forget to beat
If I forget the mercy seat. * * * * * * * * * * * *

As sung at the Harrod's Creek Shape Note Convention, Brownsboro KY, March 2008. The third verse, my favorite, was not sung:

There is a scene where spirits blend,
Where friend holds fellowship with friend;
Though sundered far, by faith they meet
Around one common mercy seat.

  • @sospello She is an Anabaptist, possibly a Mennonite. In the video you can see a few other ladies wearing these headcoverings as well.

  • Thank you for posting that this was the Harrod's Creek Shape Note Convention, Brownsboro KY, March 2008. Sorry that the third verse, your favorite, was not sung:

    There is a scene where spirits blend,

    Where friend holds fellowship with friend;

    Though sundered far, by faith they meet

    Around one common mercy seat.

  • Thanks for another posting from Harrod's Creek, PL. They are a great group. Can you tell me about the woman leading; is she a Catholic sister or...?????
