  • How much does it take to get started, like how much for an engine or box cars

  • @ren439 You can put together a small battery powered engine for under $1,000.00. The sky is the limit, but most members scrounge for parts and cobble impressive models together from scraps. Many model railroaders have far more money invested in their smaller scales!

  • @cphuntington97 Where do people get the parts to make these? And how do you make them? More-so, what's the scale? and track size? (and how do the trains run? [the deisel ones]). I'd like to maybe build a deisel one sometime.

  • @JeffHendrie We cast many of our own details by way of aluminum sand casting or brass with lost wax, but most people buy the mechanical parts. There are many scales, but the primary gauges here in NY are 7.5", 4.75" & 3.5". The popular scales are 1/8 and 1/12. Some people use battery powered electric engines, some people use gasoline engines, and some of those gasoline engines have hydraulic drive systems. I'm hoping to cobble something together this year myself.

  • Very nice layout and formidable locos. Thumbs up! :)

  • @cphuntington97 Thanks, I'll definitely have to check this club out. Guess a Northern or Ten Wheeler would be the best choice.

  • @Fireheart528 The turns are tight at TCME, but we have 80' radius minimum at Mud Creek.

  • @cphuntington97 Think I might have to join up. Never really thought of it too much, but the variety just in this scale is too neat to keep out of. So on the idea of the handcar, what's the biggest rigid-frame engine there? BC I've a 4-8-4 and 4-12-2 handcar planned, but not started yet.

  • @cphuntington97 I think so too. That's why I asked about the larger engines. An 80" drivered Northern 4-8-4 would probly be a good choice, given the relative length of the model. Looks like the layout curves could handle that pretty well. By the way, are there any club-owned engines there or is it mostly members' engines?

  • @Fireheart528 We always talk about setting up a hand car at the club. It'd be great fun...
