"Rinaldo was first produced at the Queen's (later King's) Theatre in the Haymarket on 24 February 1711. It was Handel's first opera for London, and also the first Italian opera specifically composed for the London stage.
...

The action is set at the time of the First Crusade (1096-99). Christian forces led by Goffredo (Godfrey of Bouillon) are laying siege to the city of Jerusalem, held by the Saracen king Argante. With Goffredo are his brother Eustazio and his daughter Almirena, who is in love with the Christian knight Rinaldo. Argante is supported by Armida, Queen of Damascus and a powerful sorceress.
...

In a beautiful garden with singing birds, Almirenas thoughts are of love. She and Rinaldo exchange endearments until suddenly Armida abducts Almirena under cover of a cloud full of fire-breathing monsters, leaving a distraught Rinaldo. He tells Goffredo and Eustazio what has happened and Eustazio suggests he seek help from a Christian sorcerer. Rinaldo is encouraged and calls on the winds and heaven to second his revenge. " - Anthony Hicks

Le vostr'ali a questo piè.

Cieli, numi, il braccio armate
Contro chi pena mi diè.

Winds, storms, lend
your wings to my feet.

Heavens, gods, strengthen my arm
against those who have caused me sorrow.

  • I'd like to see sheet music of Venti turbini as sung in the movie "Farinelli il castrato" because it is so diferent from this one,.. The one from the movie is sung in a higher register and with completely different coloratura arrangement.

  • What Handel wrote is what you see on this video. It's the same aria; same score written by the same composer. Genaux, Daniels, Bowman, Jaroussky, Malas/Ragin are all singing this score you see here. The difference is the ornamentation of the 'da capo' which is up to the singer; it's never written. It is the interpretation of the performers. So you can never find a score that matches what you hear in Farinelli soundtrack or in any other recording.

  • About the register: it is only the difference in the pitch standard chosen by the performers to tune their instruments, nothing else.

  • Mr? know it all? thnx?

Well, I don't see the necessity of it being on the paper. Scores are only to communicate what was composed. And ornamentation is supposed to be unique to the performer. If you aren't going to imitate it, you don't need the score. To hear it is enough to study/appreciate how the singer paraphrases the original thought. It's irrelevant if it's an F or a D that s/he's singing? It would look like a bunch of 16th notes up and down the staff all over the place anyway, lol! :)

  • who play the violin?? Jacobs?

  • I know Jacobs plays harpsichord, but I don't think he mastered the violin to this degree. According to the CD booklet, violin part here must have been played by Petra Müllejans, the concertmaster of the Freiburger Barockorchester.

  • Enfin une pièce où le basson est à l'honneur.... Très joli.

  • @Dacookstar Marry Handel? OK, necrophilia is kinda cute. Genaux is already married.

  • As of today 31 July 2011 there is ONE of this box set available (used) for ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS.

  • vivica is vivica.... fantastic

  • Magnifique ! Quelle voix, quel orchestre ! Brillant ! Je ne me lasse pas d'écouter cet air. Grand merci de l'avoir posté !

  • @skip8619 violino is violin. its solo violin, violins I and II with oboe I and II doubling. Cello is considered bassi which in this case is actually short for basso continuo. Viola is violetta. When in doubt, check the clefs.

  • poor bassoonist that must be a terror... O.O

  • Beautiful! I love Handel's music, thanks dearly for sharing!

  • When it says "violino" on the score, is a what would be a cello nowadays, or a viola? I'm assuming that "violetta" is violin.

  • Eccellente! Stupenda versione. Bravissimi musici e cantante. Molte grazie. `E un gioiello.
