Richard Lainhart's performance (part 2) www.otownmedia.com Filmed at Handmade Music Night at Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, New York. Richard chose his Buchla 200e Electric Music Box not only because of its compact size and functional density, but also because it's the only patch able modular synthesizer with preset memory, making it ideal for live performance. About the music: "These are free improvisations based on exploring the sounds, tonalities, and textures available from electronic instruments and processing. There are no rules as such, and basically anything goes, but they are usually performed with live electronics rather than with pre-recorded material, to allow for the greatest improvisational freedom."

  • what is the computer being used for, what software are you running and what is the regular keyboard there for?

    Love the music BTW!

  • I'm pretty sure that Rich is running an Arturia Moog Modular V Software Synth on his computer for some additional textures or a for the sequenced bass line which he briefly runs in this performance. He's using the small midi keyboard on his left side to play the soft synth.

  • Shouldn't he defuse the bomb first, instead of playing music? :D

  • I really need to quit watching these movies and get back to my schoolwork so that one day I can get my hands on one myself........really.............hypothetically

  • this music is so weird that even Jesus appeared in the background

  • RIP :'(

  • don't trust musicians in hawaiian shirts. you can already tell it's going to be awful.

  • I grew up loving this kind of music, and it is a joy to see it being played. Thankyou!

  • @PimpMyFahrrad that made me piss myself!!

  • too much gear

  • Er.... I meant played.

  • Well palyed Richard. The continuum is the most desirable midi controller.

  • the thing I dont get, is if he does it all improvised live like he says, then why did he need the patch memory? ey? ey?

    :P

  • Great stuff...nice to hear some melodic along with the atmospheric and noisy bleep-blooping. Most people with modulars stick to the noise madness 'cause it's easy (and usually cheesy). Kudos for showing the multifarious nature of Buchla and modulars.
