Baby Mouse Purring

Baby mice are so cute when they purr, they sound very much like tiny kittens. It is just a shame that, unlike cats, they stop purring as they get older. Little Matilda is quite the purrer, and chirper, triller, squeaker, she is the noisiest mouse I have ever had. Quite the opposite from little Stuart who is so quiet.

Matilda stopped purring when she was around three weeks old, did not purr for the longest time, but then started to again when she was around eight months old. Purring has become part of her greeting ritual, she runs to me, jumps into my hand, purring away, begging for attention. It is so cute and I am so pleased she is one of those few mice who still purr when they are all grown up :) Both she and Stuart brux when I pet them or talk to them.

She is the third mouse I have successfully handraised. She is now three weeks old and although she is so young, I am already amazed at her intelligence, I have never owned a mouse before who is this aware and learns so fast. She seems super excited about this new world she has entered. She is going to be some mouse :) Stuart adores her and is so much happier to have a mousy companion.

Note: I amplified the sound for this video. Mouse vocalizations are always very quiet and much of it is in the ultrasound range, too high pitched for us humans to hear. I plan on buying a bat detector one of these days, so I can record and hear more of my mice's vocalizations. They are a very noisy species, well at least for mousy ears :)
