Rusky Ed here with a lesson about stretching things. Attempt to translate the sample sentences before the end of the intro song. Use the pause button if you need more time!

Hopefully this lesson will stretch your understanding of the Russian language at least a little bit. And since this lesson might be a little on the long side we will get started right away with sample sentence number one which goes like this:

Его вынесли на носилках. (He was carried away on a stretcher.)
The focus word in this sentence is a form of носилки and носилки means stretcher. The forms of носилки in NAG-DIP order are носилки, носилки, носилок, носилкам, носилками, and носилках. As you can see носилках is the prepositional form of носилки.

Next we have sample sentence number two:
Бегун разминал свои ноги перед стартом. (The runner stretched his legs before the start of the race.)
The focus word here is a form of разминать and разминать means to stretch in this sentence. However, разминать can also mean to mash or to knead in other contexts.

The third sample sentence is one of those two-for-one deals:
Верёвка протянули поперёк реки.
Верёвку натянули поперёк реки.
(The rope was stretched across the river.)
Here we see the adverb поперёк and поперёк means across. We also see two verbs that have тянуть as their root. The meaning of тянуть includes to pull, to haul, to stretch, to extend, and a few other things.

Moving on now to sample sentence four:
Мы вчера неплохо оттянулись. (We had a good time yesterday.)
The word of interest here is оттянулись which is a form of оттянуть and оттянуть is a perfective form of оттягивать which has a number of possible meanings, but in this sentence the relevant meaning is to delay. For instance, оттягивать время is a way of saying to play around for awhile or to stall.

And finally we have:
Он растягивал резину, пока она не лопнула. (He stretched the rubber band so far that it broke.)
The word of interest here is лопнула which is a form of лопнуть in the perfective and лопаться in the imperfective. The meaning of лопнуть and лопаться is to burst, to break, or to snap. For instance, трубы лопнули means "the pipes burst".

And now for a few bonus sentences:
Мне надо размять ноги. (I need to stretch my legs.)
Они разминаются.
Они делают разминку.
(They are doing stretching exercises.)
Она купила джинсы стрейч.
Она купила джинсы стретч.
(She bought a pair of stretch jeans.)
Он протянул ноги. ("He turned up his toes." and is an idiomatic way of saying, "He died.")
Этого игрушечного клоуна можно растягивать. (The toy clown is stretchable.)
Она преувеличивала всякий раз, когда говорила. (She stretched the truth every time she spoke.)
And finally we have the following idiom:
Я не люблю тянуть кота за хвост. ("I don't like to stretch a cat by its tail." or "I don't like to postpone things.")

The following are the focus words for this lesson:
носилки (stretcher)
разминать (to stretch)
поперёк (across)
оттянуть (to delay)
лопнуть (to burst)

  • верёвкУ - в обоих предложениях.

    забавно звучит - ноги' :)

  • why are your pronouncing unstressed o's like an o not an a? It would really help everyone if you had the stress marked in the words on the video. Russians hear every single stress mistake when foreigners speak English.
