Shows the running of an antique Montgomery Wards 7.5 HP outboard engine. Manufactured by Clinton Engine about 1978. Engine runs but drive does not engage or pump water. Engine runs strong and has good compression. Idles smooth! Plenty of oil in gas ..engine not run for 3 or 4 years! That's why its smoking.
11/14/09 - Engine was sold for parts.

  • These are great little motors, and only weigh 38 pounds,If you have a small boat its a keeper!

  • I found out the shifting yokes inside were missing rendering it useless to me. (I got the motor free with a boat I bought). I sold it on eBay recently for parts. Thanks for the comment. Good luck with yours.

  • Also, the engine will NOT overheat in any case (if running properly otherwise), as it's totally air cooled. No real water pump, per se, just a tube behind the prop so when in forward gear, water is forced up and cools the exhaust and leg, water never goes up to the engine at all.

  • @chaser5444 That's only true if it's a lower unit that has the clutch right below the engine. Eska also made full shift lower units with a clutch dog by the pinion gears in the lower unit - I have one - and on these, the water pump runs even when it's not in gear.

  • @chaser5444 could you email me at petey032003@yahoo.com. i have some questions about the montgomery ward 7.5 boat motor

  • I had a '75, well, still have gathering dust at the folks' place. The cowling on the '75 made it look like a real outboard - too bad it didn't run like a real outboard. The cowling on this one looks like it was taken off a lawnmower.

  • I was under the impression that this was a totally air cooled engine. Thanks!

  • I hope you realize that the water pump on these only work when the engine is in gear otherwise you will over heat the motor.Nice vid!
