@merseywhogirl They warned whom they could, but the Hungarian leadership was quickly overthrown and the deportations took only 5 weeks approximately, that the foreign powers couldnt get into Slovakia and Poland to stop the deportations, yes they could have bombed the rails, but remember also that MANY Jews were simply killed in Hungary by the Iron Cross.

@honour123 No.

@The0000jan Yes i do understand their reluctance to bomb the rail lines....however, I had the honour of attending a speech given by Martin Gilbert in Ottawa in 1993 I believe....he was asked about the debate to engage bomber sorties to bomb auschwitz-birkenau and the rail lines....He replied that the American leaders both civilian and military said a plan was developed by the British and the Americans said 'Kill it', meaning the raid. The report by Vrba and Wexler (which I have) is detailed.

@merseywhogirl historians still debate if bombing (which was very inaccurate and largely ineffective) or as Churchill stated "win the war" was the better goal. Given that hindsight is 20/20 in this case, it's easy to state that the Allies did not care. Personally, I don't believe that they did not care about the fate of the jews when they discovered the full scope of the NS genocide program. If presented with the same facts today could you comprehend the scope of these murders?

@merseywhogirl In fact the allies were had been warned about what was going on on several occasions (by witnesses of the genocide who escaped and made their way to the west) but they ignored those news or considered them exaggerated.

That must have been a crazy thing to witness.
Mr Vrba is an extraordinary man. A man who witnessed great suffering. A man who escaped (with his friend alfred wexler) to warn the world about the upcoming Hungarian transports. The allies DID NOT stop the extermination through bombing the lines. 450,000 Hungarians were murdered.

@The0000jan approx 500,000 hungarian jews were killed at Auschitz-Birkenau from spring '44 to end of summer. Vrba and Wexler's report fell on deaf ears. However, according to Martin Gilbert (auschwitz and the allies) a plan for attacking the infrastructure was developed and ultimately killed by FDR and his team. It's complicated and not at all satisfying to examine this particular holocaust episode because there COULD have been more done to prevent the Hungarian deaths...cheers
