This video demonstrates how to effectively separate, wash and dry mixed samples of small and large insects using a Fractionator (a combination of washing basin and orbital shaker). This technique was shown to us by the USDA Entomological staff located at the Smithsonian and is particularly useful for malaise and pan trap samples. It also increases you productivity and general quality of your outgoing specimens.

The original publication for the fractionator is: Buffington, M.L., Gates, M.W. 2008. The Fractionator: a simple tool for mining 'Black Gold'. Popular Publication. 2(24):1-4.
