Granite countertops are tough. But can they withstand a bowling ball? This video is part of Deconstruction show hosted by Matt Blashaw . SHOW DESCRIPTION :Deconstruction explores the science behind home improvement. By conducting wild experiments, making lots of noise and engaging in some serious pyrotechnics, host and handyman Matt Blashaw dissects the who, what, where, how and why of the do-it-yourself world. How does pressurized treated wood get pressure-treated? How strong is tempered glass and how is it made? Is home insulation really fire retardant? With field trips to research labs and testing facilities and by doing some fun testing of his own, Deconstruction follows a unique mission: to understand what you're building, sometimes you need to take it apart.
I love how they jump from a glass to a can of tomatoes to...
a bowling ball two stories up. I mean c'mon!!

Oh, I forgot the most important point, stainless steel emits zero radon gas, granite emits radon gas continuously and can pose a danger to children, pets, adults, any thing that breathes. Radon gas is the number 2 cause of lung cancer, it's no joke, so my opinion is stay away from granite if you can, stainless steel is much stronger, and won't give you cancer.

Stainless steel is the best way to go in my opinion, they are almost 100 percent anti-bacterial, and will take many times more impact than granite or quartz, or pretty much any other counter top, plus you have to reseal granite counter tops every 3-5 years. Stainless steel counter tops will not break, or chip. :P

Moral of the story is .... I will not throw bowling balls at the granite I'm going to put in my kitchen. lol

I suggest to make a "Granite Ball" and throw it at surface made out of bowling ball. Nothing beats granite because of this.
- Scratch (Good luck with scratching, it will take you a while)
- Burns (Try to torch it and you will run out of torching fuel)
- Stains (with the most advanced sealers in the world, the best ones are used in granite for stain protection)
And one more thing; the whole house can burn, but granite will still be there in tact, and you can take it for your new home.
