Someone on the solar cooking group asked me to put a video showing the reflector unfolding & setup. Here it is. Hope it shows what you wanted to see. Enjoy!

  • How do you put the food in?

  • @DESERTKIRKS - there is a door on the side of the oven. There are 2 turn-latches used for old sash windows that hold it in place. You should be able to see them on the right side of the oven. Take a look at my other videos, as there are a couple there for sure where I have actually included putting the food in or taking it out as part of the video. Ken.

  • Beautiful oven - well made/designed. Can you tell me what the box/oven was originally?

  • This was a completely home-built unit from scratch. Plywood, cardboard, Mylar, glue and a bit of hardware - Ken.

  • Nice work on the oven, and compliments to your camera crew ;-) What type of adhesive did you use to secure the Mylar to the hardboard? I was concerned that the wrong adhesive would dissolve the Mylar. Have you seen anyone using sheets of mirrored plastic instead of the mylar/hardboard combo, or do you think that might cut down on the reflectivity too much? And, finally what insulation did you end up with? I know, too many questions...

  • Thanks! I used Elmer's spray adhesive. It works well, it still peel-able (for replacement of the Mylar). Yes, some have used mirror-sheets with great success. The insulation is layers of corrugated cardboard to about 1" covered in aluminum foil tape (Reflectix). It all seemds to work pretty well. Ken.

  • I love this oven it looks so light weight.

Unlike my leviathan-like plywood box that takes two to lift.

  • nice job

  • also could u please give me the website where u got the plan

  • and what is that box made out of?

  • would mylar be available at rona?

  • Heh - many years ago, I used to take my wife hot food wrapped in alternating layers of foil and paper towel - worked great. I really like the 60/40 design, but I'm thinking I should tweak the angles a bit - I'm in Florida (lat 28.5 N or so) - just found your pix on the Yahoo group - great work. I also discovered a cheap source of mirrored mylar - certain potato chip bags. As much as my family eats chips, I could probably cover the panels in just a few weeks ;-)
