民國四十二年由篤信基督、熱心教育人士張靜愚先生、郭克悌先生、賈嘉美牧師、鈕永健先生、陳維屏先生、瞿荊洲先生及桃園中壢地方士紳吳鴻森先生、徐崇德先生等會商籌設一所農工學院，期以基督救世愛人的精神，為國家造就高深科學與工程人才；在歷經多次籌備更名，於民國四十四年十月奉教育部核准立案，定名為「私立中原理工學院」，以「篤信力行」為校訓，設物理、化學、化學工程、土木工程四個學系；民國六十九年八月一日改制為「私立中原大學」。
中原大學走過半世紀的歲月，在歷屆董事會支持下，經郭克悌、謝明山、韓偉、阮大年、尹士豪、張光正、熊慎幹等諸位院校長掌理校務，貢獻良多，厥功甚偉，並分別代表了中原初創、奠基、深耕、成長、茁壯與擴張等階段。民國九十五年十二月十九日程萬里博士榮任第八任校長；現今擁有理、工、商、法、設計、人文與教育、電機資訊等七個學院，二十七個學系，二十七個碩士班及十三個博士班；歷屆畢業校友已達八萬餘人，在國家重大建設中，共創飛躍精進的時代。
瞻望未來，在校譽蒸蒸日上，屢獲教育部評鑑私立大學校院整體發展計劃之耀眼成績中，將繼續秉持基督愛世之忱，以中原的教育宗旨與理念，為國家、社會培養更多兼具品格與專業的人才。希望中原的畢業生以品格、專業改變台灣，讓台灣的高等教育因為中原而有所改變。
In 1953, a group of Christian educators and local gentries got together to establish an agricultural and engineering college in Taiwan to train science and engineering talent in the Christian spirit. After several name changes and long preparations, the Chung Yuan Christian College of Science and Engineering (CYCC) was established in October 1955 upon approval by the Ministry of Education. With education through honest, diligent pursuit and practical experience as the schools motto, the College was composed of four departments, namely, the departments of physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, and civil engineering. Upgraded to the status of a full university, CYCC was renamed Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) on Aug. 1, 1980.
After five decades, CYCU has developed with support from all members of the Board of Trustees, as well as immense contributions from past presidents and administrators Kuo Ke-tee, Hsieh Ming-shan, Han Wei, Yuan Ta-nien, Yin Shiu-hau, Chang Kwang-cheng, and Hsiung Shen-kan who represented stages in CYCU creation, foundation, growth, steadfastness, and expansion. On December 19, 2006, Dr. Wan-Lee Cheng became the 8th President of Chung Yuan Christian University and the first alumnus President in CYCUs 50-year history. Dr. Wan-Lee Cheng will carry on and develop the school tradition. CYCU currently has 7 colleges: College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Business, College of Design, College of Humanities and Education, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and School of Law; 26 departments, 24 masters programs, and 12 Ph.D. programs. CYCU has more than 70,000 alumni who are nation builders during times of progress.
With a vision for the future, CYCU has established a unique competitive advantage by adhering to its educational philosophy and mission; Knowledge Economy, Care and Guidance, and Lifetime Learning are the Universitys development objectives, while holistic education and biotechnology research are the focus. As the University grows in reputation, the Ministry of Education has on several occasions evaluated and rated CYCU as the best private comprehensive university. CYCU is unwavering in its promotion of higher education; it aims to be an integrated university that is known and recognized worldwide for its good judgment, vivacity, values, integrity, prestige, and love, the qualities that exemplify Taiwan.
