As Dr. James Smith approached his 65th birthday May 28, he contemplated how to celebrate the milestone.
With the nickname, "Autoharp Man from Al-a-Bam," you might guess that celebration would have something to do with music.
James, a licensed professional counselor and regular performer in Huntsville and South Tennessee, chose to mark his 65th year singing and playing his autoharp along the Appalachian Trail, a 2,175-mile marked footpath that stretches from Georgia to Maine.
His love affair of the autoharp continues today as he performs for any type of venue, from nursing homes and assisted living facilities, to music festivals and radio programs. He has performed 260 times in the last year around the southeastern United States.
While recently entertaining the assisted living residents at the Clare Bridge of Hampton Cove, resident Frances Lacy joined in on "Turn Your Radio On."
I'm from Alabama and boy you made us proud!
