K9 unit members Max, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois and Dutch shepherd mix, and Kaila, a 9-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, are officially off-duty after a combined seven years of service with the UMass Police Department. Newcomer Bosco is joining the force to follow in his predecessors paw-steps.
@prosenfi you are correct in saying they have no police powers, but they are not "student security". student security is the residence hall security department, police cadets work under the police department and can cuff people at the direction of a police officer.

@Lightning1369 might wanna check that, buddy. every single umass police officer carries a gun and has full police powers

@Lightning1369 Yea, except they go through the same training as state police officers, and have all the power and authority of state police officers. dumbass, go test your theory.

OK you don't know what you're talking about. ALL UMass officers have gone through the police academy. This means that they can and do carry guns and tazers. If you are thinking of cadets, who are student security, then you are right. Cadets have no police powers at all.

Campus Police are Glorified Security Guards PERIOD.Most campus police officers and I mean MOST do not carry guns or have traffic powers. Why bother being licensed as "police" officers? Join a real police dept.

If you actually knew these officers and their partners, you would change your opinion.
