1) Scotland was never "annexed" by England. The two kingdoms were unified and the parliaments merged.

2) It occurred in the early 18th century, not the late.

3) No one knows what Auld Lang Syne is actually about. It's generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships. Burns actually became something of a Unionist later in his life.
