Ahmet Brkovic picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season with an injury-time leveller as Millwall picked up their first League One point of the season.
The Lions had looked to be heading for a third successive defeat with Alex Revell's seventh-minute strike separating the teams as the game entered the 92nd-minute.
But then up popped Brkovic to crash home the equaliser for his first League goal since 29th December 2007 to secure a share of the spoils.
A draw was just about the right result with neither team really doing enough to justify all three points and both keepers having very few saves to make throughout.
Lions boss Kenny Jackett stuck to the same side that finished Tuesday night's Carling Cup clash against Northampton, with the exception of Paul Robinson, who returned from suspension in place of Andy Frampton.
Last Saturday it was Millwall who came flying out of the traps in the season's opener at Oldham with a goal after 13 seconds, but on this occasion it was Southend who nearly stole ahead in the opening minute when Charles Ademeno glanced a close range header narrowly wide.
But it only took the Seasiders six minutes to break the deadlock as a result of some poor defending.
There seemed to be minimal danger when Dan Harding pumped in a deep free-kick, Lions keeper Forde came charging out of his area but failed to claim cleanly under pressure and Revell picked up the loose ball to slot home.
Brkovic headed a Chris Hackett freekick straight at Steve Mildenhall on eight minutes, but other than couple of long-range efforts from Lewis Grabban plus a Dave Martin shot that bounced wide and Zak Whitbread backward header that dropped onto the roof of the net, the first-half proved a quiet affair.
Having established a somewhat fortuitous half-time advantage, Southend seemed content to sit back and let Millwall try to find a way through.
A shot on the turn by Grabban flashed wide two minutes after the restart and then brkovic's dinked throughball was just headed clear as Ali Fuseini looked set to pounce.
A great run by Grabban down the left on 55 minutes set up Brkovic, but the little midfielder toe-poked his effort agonisingly wide of the post.
Manager Jackett brought on Neil Harris and Jimmy Abdou for Grabban and Fuseini on the hour mark, and the former was left fuming when clearly held back by Adam Barrett as he broke into the area 11 minutes from time.
Referee Keith Stroud, who ended up with seven players' names in his book, was unsighted along with his assistants and it looked to be game over for Millwall as they could not get that all-important break in front of goal.
With the clock ticking and Millwall staring a third successive dfeat in the face, Marc Laird let fly with a cracking shot that smacked the bar, Paul Robinson threw himself at the loose ball and keeper Mildenhall flung himself at full stretch to parry the latter's header. And there was Brky, perfectly placed, to lash home the rebound and send The Den faithful into raptures, as much with joy as sheer relief at getting the first point of the season on the board.
