TEDxABQ - Jill Vialet - What Play Can Teach Us

Jill Vialet believes that playing is essential to human development, and addresses significant education reform issues by encouraging greater creativity and problem-solving skills. This approach, she says, creates learning environments where kids feel safer, more engaged and more connected. Jill launched Playworks in 1996 in Berkeley, California. In 2012, Playworks will be bringing play and physical activities to 350 low-income, urban elementary schools in 23 cities, including Albuquerque.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Beautiful. Really Beautiful. I too have often fought for opportunities to be a 'Clarence' too, but the idea of setting up a network is spectacular. In general the policy has been to make boys into girls and girls into boys, so that they are equally maleable and from there, use that to make them into livestock for the system. The will to empower them to discover and create their own sense of self is largely absent in modern education.
