anyways, if you look closely at the little black device on the headstock of his guitar, you'll actually see a screen that tell him his instrument is in tune. if black crow is asking what his technique is that he can produce notes without strumming, that's just old fashioned finger tapping. his amplifiers have a modest amount of sustain and reverb on them that he can tap away without missing tone or volume of the notes he is playing.

actually, that wouldn't be a killswitch you are describing, that would be an e-bow that vibrates the string.  a kill switch is a small button installed in between the volume circuits. when pressed, it cuts off the volume of the guitar, or "kills" the sound, and resumes the volume when depressed. however, the little black device at the head of his guitar is neither a switch nor an e-bow. it's just a tuner clipped to the head to let him know his instrument is still in tune.
