What an incredible performance.
And the soloist is just simply... fantastic.
I just have no adequate words -
So beautiful.
The whole thing.

Totally wonderful...Howells has to contend for the title of greatest English choral composer! Love this...:)

@davidmoye The KCC acoustic can be a problem as well as a blessing but for those listeners in the chapel the experience is often more immediate or intimate than might be expected. The choir are well aware of the problems and difficulties and finesse their performance accordingly. You are right about the mic placement though....as always the TV viewer has the best seat in the house!!

Can I get a recording of this somewhere?
-
@Eurofrank1 Baritone, surely- too low for me after shrieking in my range.

The soloist is very good. nice approach, easy transition into the high register. The problem with his approach..how much of that subtlety will translate into an acoustic as wet as a cathedral? I think not much. The mic placement was key here. I am curious to know if anyone agrees or disagrees with this point.

@xithro The Durufle requiem is gorgeous, too (I got to sing the mezzo solo!). If there's ever a choir doing a concert of all Howells and Durufle, sign me up!
-
@Seasass listen to the last couple of measures of the Durufle requiem if you like this.

The soloist is awesome!
That final phrase from 02:39 to 03:00 is my candidate for the two most beautiful measures ever composed.

The tenor soloist also sang in "We three kings". I predict that he will enjoy a successful career as a professional singer if he continues like this! The R.A.M. opera course beckons?
