Scale model of a bireme made out of legos. 36 oarsmen arranged in two banks with 13 other crew members, including 4 hoplites and 2 toxotes. The outriggers on the sides help to maintain the ship's balance while in the water.
Interpretation of the walls surrounding Syracuse's harbor from the Roman invasion in 212 BC. A fire ship is anchored in front to deter landing ships. Archimedes is on the top of the wall, manning a ballista that would fire large bolts.
The pivoting claw is propelled by a weight system and is capable of tilting large ships like this bireme enough to cause them to capsize. Because of the ships' lightweight materials, mostly pine and fir, they would not actually sink under normal conditions, but they would list drastically to one side or completely upside down, rendering them useless and drowing crew members. The actual Claw of Archimedes is projected to have been able to lift larger triremes completely out of the water.
It was used to either smash downward on ships or to lift them up drop, and or smash them against the rocks of the shores. Not get under them and tip them over.
