Excellent playing but very studied and neither compellingly beautiful nor especially imaginative.

I think rather heavy in the cello etude (Op. 25 No. 7). I grew up when I was small kid listening the Arrau recording of the etudes. And this one has still an impression on me today. So I always have that performance in mind when I hear this piece.

my comment was ironic - i happen to know that she used to be a professional.
and by the by, can professionals not bring their personal life experiences to music? or are amateurs' lives generally more inspiring? i doubt that!

Yes, it's a mistake to assume that the best musicians are always going to be the professionals. Amateurs can bring their personal life experiences to music. One of my pupils decided to study for a Music university degree late in life after a professional career in another field and at the age of 69 he gave an examination performance of Beethoven's Sonata in A flat Op. 110 which was more thoughtful than many professionals whom I have heard in that piece.

Many people play with a professional standard and are multi-talented, although their profession is something else other than music. We have had doctors for example who are extremely good pianists as well as excellent in their field of medicine.
