Starting a rug is the hardest thing to do, and beginners are often better served to work on a start made by an experienced rug maker to become comfortable with the stitch, but this is what people have most often asked me to record a tutorial about, so its my first of many more to come.

Higher quality versions of this video can be found at Google video and Veoh - I couldn't get YT's mass uploader to recognize my .asf file, even though all the videos I upload via the web interface are that format (grrr!)

  • great video! But, WHAT COLOR is your nail polish?

  • Thank you... but since all my gothy gear is packed away, I don't know. My wife and I usually shop at Ulta, and I usually go with blood reds, deep purples, or blacks- the usual Goth range of hues, *grin* (See also response to comment below.)

  • thanks - great video for a beginner! now - off to your website!

  • You're welcome- I love this craft, and I love teaching it.

A later video- starting a rug from a half hitch, is an even easier method for a beginner.

  • I saw that one first but didn't strike home until I saw this one. Couldn't quite figure out where you were going with the half hitch.. why it was "easy". Makes sense now. (scurries away to find hubbies old t-shirts to practice with)

  • I'm just going to answer over on the rug blog, Youtube has a 500 character limit.

  • Wow you have fantastic nails, mine are terrible :(

    Great tutorial by the way!

  • Thanks for sharing! Just doing some research to see whether this is a craft that I might try to tackle.
